What is Invisalign and how does it work?

What are the benefits of Invisalign?

Compared to fixed traditional braces Invisalign has a number of benefits. The appearance is a primary benefit, there are no unsightly metal braces involved, Invisalign just uses a series of clear aligners which are practically invisible. You don’t have to worry about what you’re eating or drinking either as the aligners can be quickly and easily removed.

Patients who have undergone both fixed brace treatment and Invisalign report that Invisalign is much more comfortable.

Is Invisalign effective for all orthodontic issues?

Invisalign is an incredibly versatile system that can address a wide range of orthodontic concerns. Whether you are dealing with overcrowded teeth, gaps, overbites, underbites, or crossbites, Invisalign can often offer an effective solution. While it is suitable for many cases, some severe orthodontic issues might require traditional braces or additional procedures to achieve optimal results. Your dental professional will assess your condition and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan to help you achieve a beautiful, harmonious smile.

How long does treatment take?

This varies massively depending on a number of factors:

Where your teeth are to start with: If more movement is required this will take more aligners and so more time.
Your compliance with treatment: Invisalign is heavily dependent on your compliance in wearing the aligners. If you don’t wear them for long enough throughout the day your teeth will not move as swiftly and treatment will take longer.
How your teeth respond to the treatment: Some people’s teeth are more stubborn than others for a multitude of reasons. In these cases it is often necessary to wear the aligners for slightly longer to allow sufficient time for the teeth to move.

Are there any additional or hidden charges?

No, our consultation and x-ray charges are completely deducted from the Invisalign treatment cost. We also include any retainers needed (fixed and removable) for after treatment. Additional aligners are also included in the cost.

The only additional charges that may be present would be for additional treatment needed to either stabilise the health of your teeth and gums before the Invisalign starts or cosmetic treatment after the Invisalign

What do I expect after treatment?

Your teeth will always try and return to the position they are currently in. This is because they are in this position for a reason, your body wants them to be in this position.

After treatment we enter something called the retention phase of treatment. You will need to wear retainers nightly to hold the teeth in position and we may also placed a fixed retainer on the back of your teeth to help hold them in position.

Is there an adjustment stage with the Invisalign?

Yes, for the first few days the aligners will feel unusual, you may notice a bit of aching as the teeth start to move and may find your mouth has to adjust its posture around the aligners when speaking for example. This is usually a very quick process and within a week or two your mouth will fully adapt and it will feel unusual to have them out.

Can I eat and drink with Invisalign?

One of the significant advantages of Invisalign is its flexibility when it comes to eating and drinking. Unlike traditional braces that come with dietary restrictions, you can remove your Invisalign aligners before meals. This means you can continue enjoying all your favourite foods without worrying about damaging the aligners. However, it is essential to maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing after every meal and before putting the aligners back in your mouth. Remember that drinking anything other than plain water with the aligners in place might stain or damage them, so it’s best to remove them beforehand.

How do I clean my Invisalign aligners?

Proper care and maintenance are essential for the success of your Invisalign treatment. To keep your aligners clean and clear, gently brush them using a soft toothbrush and lukewarm water. Avoid using hot water, as it can cause the aligners to warp or lose their shape. Additionally, you can use specialised cleaning crystals or solutions recommended by your dentist or orthodontist to ensure thorough cleaning. Maintaining excellent oral hygiene is equally crucial, as it prevents the build-up of plaque and bacteria on both your teeth and aligners.

Are Invisalign aligners comfortable to wear?

Invisalign aligners are designed with your comfort in mind. They are made of smooth, custom-fit plastic, which reduces irritation and minimises discomfort. However, some patients may experience mild discomfort during the initial stages of wearing a new set of aligners. This is completely normal and is a sign that the aligners are effectively moving your teeth to their desired positions. Unlike traditional braces with metal brackets and wires that can cause abrasions or sore spots in the mouth, Invisalign aligners offer a more pleasant and comfortable orthodontic experience.

Can I whiten my teeth while using Invisalign?

Yes, you can whiten your teeth while undergoing Invisalign treatment. In fact, some patients find that the aligners can act as whitening trays, making the process even more convenient. From this we will make you some complimentary retainers to keep your teeth in position. Our aftercare plan includes free replacement retainers every year to ensure the retainers keep their durability and strength. If you ever lose your retainers we can use this scan to make some retainers within 48 hours.

Check-ups and Cleanings: Our aftercare plan includes your annual check-up and twice yearly hygiene visits. Keeping your teeth straight makes oral hygiene easier and we will ensure your teeth and gums stay healthy.
