What is gum contouring?

Gum contouring is a precise dental treatment that reshapes the tissue framing your teeth. By refining an uneven, prominent or receding gum line, we can help your teeth appear more balanced while protecting the foundations of your smile.

For some patients, treatment means carefully removing a small amount of excess gum to reveal more of the natural tooth. For others, crown lengthening or soft-tissue grafting may be more appropriate. The right approach depends on your gum health, tooth proportions and the result you want to achieve.

Gum Contouring FAQs

Gum contouring reshapes the gum line. A gingivectomy removes excess tissue, while crown lengthening removes gum tissue and, where needed, a small amount of bone to expose more of the tooth. It may be recommended to improve symmetry or prepare teeth for crowns and veneers.
Treatment can improve gum-line symmetry, reveal more of the natural tooth, support oral health and create better proportions around the smile. Many patients also feel more confident after correcting an uneven or overly prominent gum line.
Treatment is completed under local anaesthetic, so you should remain comfortable during the procedure. Mild tenderness or swelling afterward is normal and usually temporary. We provide clear advice for managing your recovery.
Initial recovery commonly takes around one to two weeks. A softer diet and careful oral hygiene may be recommended during this time. Complete healing can take several weeks or longer depending on the procedure.
Soft-tissue grafting uses tissue from the palate or a suitable donor material to add thickness to the gum and cover an exposed root. It can improve gum-line appearance while protecting vulnerable root surfaces.

What does crown lengthening involve?

Crown lengthening is a surgical procedure that reshapes gum tissue and, where needed, removes underlying bone to expose more of a tooth. It may be considered for some cases of excess gum showing or to help make a tooth suitable for a crown or another restoration.

It is different from treatment for gum recession and is not intended to cover exposed roots. Your clinician will explain suitable options, possible benefits, risks, healing and aftercare before you decide. Treatment results and healing times vary.
