Dental Bridge Questions

Everything you need to know before your consultation.

What is a dental bridge?
A dental bridge is a fixed restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth. The replacement tooth, or teeth, is supported by neighbouring natural teeth, dental crowns or implants. It is designed to restore the appearance of the gap while helping you bite and chew more comfortably.
How do I know if I am suitable for a dental bridge?
Suitability depends on the position and size of the gap, the health of your gums, your bite and the strength of the teeth that would support the bridge. Your clinician will assess these factors carefully and explain whether a bridge, implant or denture offers the most predictable option for you.
What types of dental bridge are available?
Options can include conventional bridges supported by crowns, adhesive bridges bonded to a neighbouring tooth and implant-supported bridges. Each type has different clinical requirements. We will recommend an approach only after assessing the missing-tooth space and the surrounding teeth.
Is a bridge better than a dental implant?
Neither treatment is automatically better for every patient. A bridge can provide a fixed replacement without placing an implant, while an implant can replace a tooth without relying on neighbouring teeth for support. Bone levels, tooth health, treatment time, maintenance and budget all influence the right choice.
Does having a dental bridge fitted hurt?
Where tooth preparation is needed, treatment is completed with local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable. Some temporary sensitivity can occur after preparation or fitting, but this usually settles. We explain each stage beforehand and provide clear advice if you experience any discomfort afterward.
How long does a dental bridge last?
The lifespan of a bridge varies according to its design, the condition of the supporting teeth, your bite and how well the area is maintained. Thorough cleaning, regular examinations and professional hygiene care are important because the supporting teeth and gums must remain healthy.
How do I clean underneath a dental bridge?
You will need to clean both around the supporting teeth and beneath the replacement tooth. Super floss, floss threaders or appropriately sized interdental brushes may be recommended. We will demonstrate the most suitable technique when your bridge is fitted and review it during future appointments.
How much does a dental bridge cost?
The fee depends on the type of bridge, the number of teeth being replaced, the materials selected and whether supporting teeth require additional treatment. Following your clinical assessment, you will receive a written treatment plan with the complete fee explained before treatment begins.
