Why Hygiene Matters

Plaque hardens. Your toothbrush cannot remove it.

Plaque collects naturally throughout the day. When it is not removed completely, it can harden into calculus around and below the gum line. At that stage, brushing alone is no longer enough and professional cleaning is needed.

Left unmanaged, plaque and calculus can contribute to:

Bleeding or inflamed gums Persistent bad breath Gum disease Tooth decay Surface staining An unpleasant taste
Plaque and calculus before and after dental hygiene treatment
Individual results vary. Your hygienist will explain what can be achieved safely after assessing your teeth and gums.

Dental Hygiene Questions

Everything you need to know before your visit.

Can I book a hygienist without seeing a dentist first?
Yes. We offer direct-access hygiene appointments, so you can book a professional clean without having a dental examination first. If your hygienist identifies something requiring a dentist's assessment, we will explain the finding and help you arrange the appropriate appointment.
What is the difference between a scale and polish and Airflow?
A scale and polish removes plaque and hardened calculus before polishing the tooth surfaces. Airflow uses a controlled stream of air, warm water and fine powder to remove biofilm and lift surface staining. Your hygienist can advise which option best matches your needs.
How often should I see a dental hygienist?
There is no single interval for everyone. Your ideal recall depends on your gum health, plaque levels, medical history, smoking status, previous treatment and home-care routine. We will recommend a personalised interval after your appointment.
Will a hygiene appointment hurt?
You may notice some sensitivity if your gums are inflamed or there is significant build-up, but we will work carefully and adapt the appointment around your comfort. Please tell us about sensitivity or anxiety before treatment begins so we can plan accordingly.
Can dental hygiene help with bad breath?
Professional cleaning can reduce plaque, calculus and gum inflammation that may contribute to bad breath. We will also discuss cleaning around the gum line and between the teeth. Persistent bad breath can have several causes, so further assessment may sometimes be recommended.
Can Airflow whiten my teeth?
Airflow removes external surface staining and may reveal a cleaner, brighter appearance, but it does not change the underlying shade of the teeth. If you would like to lighten your natural tooth colour, we can explain professional teeth-whitening options separately.
